Radial-Ulnar Synostosis or
Osseous union, of any 2 adjacent bones can involve any part of the upper extremity.
AliceAnn's hand therefore is without adaptation in a 180 degress from normal.
Try twisting your left hand so that your thumb is down, now pickup a glass and drink from it with your hand in that position. To even get it in position you have to rotate your shoulder and elbow out. Now you know the position her hand was in, and can understand how using a left hand in this position would limit your quality of life.
So now the graphic part, because the elbow has tendons and nerves in it, the doctors no longer attempt to seperate the bones. Instead, approx. 3" from the wrist they cut both the radius and ulna, stretching the muscle as much as possible they rotate the hand and pin the bones together in this new configuration. Process took 2 1/2 hrs to complete. She arrived Valentine's day at 6:00 a.m. and was back home by 2:45 p.m. the next day.
The surgery was a success and almost a full 180 degrees was obtained. This will enable keyboarding, ball holding and shooting, box carrying, etc. et.
She is now resting at time of this posting!
